Abel Gance's original 1927 masterpiece is a must-see for not only silent-film buffs, but for all interested in classic world cinema. You are taken from the future emperor's first strategic victory, a schoolyard snowball fight, to the climactic invasion of Italy.
Thought lost, the presentation of Napoleon was the result of many years of labour and co-operation between The Images Film Archive, The British Film Institute, Abel Gance, Claude Lelouch and finally Francis Ford Coppola's Zoetrope Studios.
With the support of Zoetrope, Napoleon could be properly presented with a new original symphonic score specially composed and conducted by Carmine Coppola at Radio City Music Hall.
Today from its 75th Anniversary Napoleon is presented for the very first time on DVD for an all-new generation to discover and enjoy.
When my father was a kid all the movie theatres had orchestras. I imagined what it would be like to see Napoleon with a live orchestra. That made me want to become involved with it - Francis Coppola.
